How does booking a session work?
Surf photography is conditions based, so the process can be variable. While a session can be organized within days, I recommend surfers, or those gifting sessions to another surfer, book weeks or months in advance. I prefer to get to know the surfer, their skill level, board preference and goals. It also provides an opportunity for me to share what the surfer can expect of me as well as how scheduling works. After booking a session, I will contact the person who booked the session by email. From there, we will schedule a free consultation, where we can talk further about the session, scheduling and deliverables.
I can shoot from the beach or in the water. On the beach, I shoot with a tripod and a telephoto lens. In the water, I use a full surf housing to get shots typically only reserved for the pros. I can shoot for up to 90 minutes in the water before needing a break and up to three hours per day.
Do you allow group sessions?
Yes, but never more than three surfers at a time. When groups get larger, I can’t guarantee everyone will get quality photos. Surfers tend to ride directionally based on their stance, paddling or riding away from me in the water. From the beach, surfers may split waves; only one surfer can be shot at a time. Two is what I recommend. Please contact me if your group is larger than three.
How does scheduling work?
After establishing communication during the booking process, we will coordinate by text, email or phone, whichever the client prefers. Because surfing is conditions based, I have the surfer provide their preferable days of the week, and then we continue communication to identify good time, weather and surf windows throughout the year. While I shoot in the winter, it’s more enjoyable for everyone to shoot in the spring, summer and fall. Based on conditions and beach, I can shoot in waves up to 8 feet.
How long do you hold bookings for?
Bookings are valid for one year to the purchase date. I only accept about a 8-12 clients per year, not including contests and events.
Are you willing to travel?
I am willing to travel a 100-mile radius from Portland, before assessing mileage fees. This covers Newport, Oregon, to Long Beach, Washington, and to the Cascades crest. If I assess mileage fees, I use the IRS recommended fee schedule. I’m am willing to negotiate this fee, so don’t let this get in the way, but please contact me prior to booking to discuss further if travel outside these areas are necessary.
What about to a different region or country?
Please contact me for custom travel requests.
What equipment do you use?
I shoot with a Canon mirrorless camera housed in an Aquatech Imaging Solutions surf housing. When working in cold water, I rely on a thick neoprene wetsuit with gloves, a hood, and booties, plus fins to stay mobile in the water.
Why work with me?
I’m an advanced surfer and waterman with more than a decade of surf and underwater photography experience. I use the same expert current and wave reading skills when I’m shooting, putting myself in the best possible position every time to capture your best moments. As a former ocean lifeguard, I prioritize safety and won’t put the surfer in a dangerous situation. And, I don’t sacrifice quality for quantity, my photography is art; I look for the best, coolest moments in the water with the surfer. I am also a string believer in transparency, there are no hidden fees or surprises; that’s why, in part, I publish my fee schedule.
Where else can I see your work?
Over the years, I’ve collaborated with local surfers, surf shops, tourism bureaus, and editorial outlets. While much of my work lives in the digital environments, social media, websites and marketing campaigns, Gorge Performance in Portland, features a year round photography exhibit with items for sale.
What are your favorite shooting locations?
For surf photography, I love sunrise sessions at Cape Kiwanda and afternoons at Short Sands Beach. In the mountains, I’m drawn to places with crystal-clear water and dramatic landscapes.
